Q&A

Frequently asked questions

What is Curly Girl method?

The Curly Girl method is a natural way to care for your hair and emphasize your curls. If your hair is naturally a little supple or curly, trying the method can prove to be very fruitful. Only certain products that do not contain sulphates, silicones, parabens and drying alcohols are suitable for the Curly Girl method. You will find only Curly Girl approved products from our shop, with a few exceptions.

Are all your products in Curly Girls Shop suitable for the Curly Girl method?

Yes. All our products are Curly Girl approved. Every single product is carefully handpicked to our store, so that you could have the widest possible scale of amazing Curly Girl products.

All our products have been tested by the owner of Curly Girls Shop and Curly Hair Salon called Salon Enigma, in Helsinki Finland.

You will find 100% natural products, vegan products among others from our store. Just filter by the category wanted  - easy as that!

How do I know if the products are suitable for me?

You will find a wide range of products from our store with different brands. Most of our products are suitable from straight hair to afro hair, but we always recommend to check the categories for hairtypes. You will find all categories for all hair types from the home page.

You will also find an INC list in every product description, so you can easily check if all the ingredients are right for you.

Where can I check the ingredients of products?

You will INC in all product descriptions. INC, meaning the ingredients. You can always check the INC list from here. Curlsbot will check the ingredient list for you to see if they contain ingredients many people with curly hair like to avoid.

Why my hair is not curly, even though I have used Curly Girl products?

There can be many reasons. Unfortunately, not all hairtypes will get curly. Please note that you will also have to follow Curly Girl method, meaning that you can only use products suitable for the method. Hair driers, straightening irons or curlers are also not suitable for the method, as the method aims for natural curls.

Please also check that your products are suitable (you can use CurlsBot) for the method and do not include unsuitable ingredients.

Should I book a haircut for curly hair to get started?

To make your curls pop out and get a better shape for your curls, it is recommended to book a haircut for a curly hair professional. However, this is not a ”must”.

If you live in Helsinki, Finland, you can book a haircut meant for curly hair from Salon Enigma. Salon Enigma and Curly Girls Shop are owned by the same owner, Susanna, who is passioned about natural Curly Hair.

In case you live in another country, we recommend to search for the local Curly Hair professional.

Is there a pick-up option?

You can pick up the products from Salon Enigma salons in Helsinki Finland. When you are making the purchase, select ”local pickup” and the address you prefer. All pick ups are free, so you don’t have to pay for delivery.

How can I start the Curly Girl method at home?

To start the method, you will need to do a ”Final Wash.” It is meant to clean your hair for unsuitable products and it is only used at the beginning or the method or if you have used some unsuitable products on your hair. The Final wash, includes sulfates, unlike other Curly Girl products. To help you to get started, we have one Final Wash shampoo on sale: Pretty Curly Girl Reset. After the Final Wash, we recommend for you to use Curly Girl conditioner and start the use of CG - approved styling products for your hair.

After the Final Wash, do not use the Reset (or another Final Wash shampoo) anymore, but start using ONLY products that are Curly Girl approved, and no not include sulfates or other unsuitable ingredients.

We recommend washing your hair with shampoo regularly and more rarely with co-wash products (cleansing conditioner). ”Low-poo” means a silicon and sulfate free shampoo (normal shampoo).  After washing your hair, we recommend the use of Curly Girl approved conditioner (and a mask for extra dry hair). After that, you can use a leave-in-conditioner. Styling products, such as gel should be used after (to wet her, as instructed).

Drying your hair: At home, we recommend the use of an old T-shirt or microfiber towel. Squeeze your hair gently, do not rub. Plopping is a technique that uses a cotton T-shirt (or microfiber towel - we have great options here) to dry your wet curls, helping to increase definition and cut down on frizz. Use plopping instead of a normal towel to get better curls without frizz.

You can let your hair air dry or use a diffuser for the best results.

Do not touch your hair until they are completely dry. After, you can squeeze the potential cast from your hair (you can also use a small amount of hair oil).

Other important washes and their meanings

"Co-wash" A co-wash is the use of a specially formulated  conditioner to remove buildup and cleanse the hair. In is recommended occasionally, especially if you wash your hair very often.

”Clarifying wash” Clarifying wash is very important. Clarifying products includes stronger ingredients and therefore we recommend the wash in every 2 weeks or within 2 months, depending on how often you wash your hair. Clarifying wash is important as it removes buildup from your hair and scalp.

“Build- up”  Clarifying shampoos deeply cleanse the hair and scalp by removing stubborn dirt, oil and product build up. If you have a lot of build up in your hair, it can prevent your hair from curling.

Are your products vegan?

Some of our products are vegan. You can find all the vegan products from their own category here.
